COVID-19 Testing
If you need a COVID-19 test, do not go to the emergency room. Contact your medical provider to get tested. If you feel like you’re having a medical emergency, call 9-1-1.
You should get tested if you:
- Have symptoms, especially if you are unvaccinated or have serious or chronic underlying health conditions.
- Were exposed to someone with COVID-19. Get tested five days after exposure, if possible.
- You are not vaccinated. Those who are not vaccinated should be tested once a week.
Help us keep the Hospital Emergency Departments free for health emergencies. Do not go to the Emergency Department for a COVID-19 test.
There are different kinds of tests for diagnosing COVID-19. The most common ones are:
- Antigen tests are designed to detect proteins from the virus that causes COVID-19. Antigen tests are very specific for the virus but are not as sensitive as molecular tests. This means that a positive result is highly accurate, but a negative result does not rule out infection. These are rapid tests can be performed in minutes.
- Molecular tests (also known as PCR tests) detect genetic material from the virus. These are laboratory tests and can take days to complete.
